Yesterday, I was accepted into the closed beta (as were a few of you who signed up the same day I did). I promptly created an account and began downloading the 1.1GB installer file. This afternoon, ...[more]

It's great when things work...
Some things just aren't fun to test. But when they work in a real-life situation, it's great. When I built my main gaming PC a couple years ago, I decided to go with RAID1 for my hard drives. In case you don't understand what RAID is, most modern motherboards support low-level RAID (0 and 1). Both versions require 2 hard drives. RAID0 makes the two drives look like 1 to Windows and also has a speed benefit - Basically, it adds the two drives together (example: two 100GB drives in RAID0 look like one 200GB hard drive). RAID1 mirrors the two drives providing a real-time backup of the system in case one of the drives fails or is removed, for some reason. The two drives still look like one in Windows, but you only get half the amount of drive space (Example: two 100GB drives in RAID1 look like one 100GB drive in Windows, but both drives have the same data on them). Anyway, I have two 500GB drives in RAID1.

Lately I've been monkeying around with some Garrysmod mod stuff, so I wanted to test some things. The other day I tested one of the final version of my SVN script (check the forums), but hadn't gotten around to playing the game. I woke up in the late morning Saturday and figured it'd be a great time to check some things. While eating lunch, I let Gmod update the spawnicons for PHX3. After lunch, I came back to my computer, opened the spawnmenu, but it wouldn't close. Pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del after a bit and tried to launch Task Manager. Nothing happened. And I let it sit for a while. So after doing a hard reset on the machine, I got a warning during boot that my RAID array had degraded.

Now, the nice thing about RAID1, (repeat after me) when one drive fails, the other one still has all the data. Only one drive didn't fail... they were just out of sync. No biggie, though. After taking the next 12 hours (or so) to backup all my files, it was time to get to work. That's what I did this morning. All it really took was a reboot, selecting "rebuild array", and about 5 hours and things were back to normal. Yes, it took 5 hours to rebuild the array. I'm using 290GB of my 500... mostly with backups of PCs I've built in the last year. So like I said, it's nice when things work like they should... and that's a scary situation to test for.

Even though nobody has posted in the forums about it, I've had a couple verbal requests to keep working on the online Gmod script. I've got a solid release available for download, but I'm not quite ready to make it completely public. I don't exactly need test subjects at this point, but if you just want to see it or enjoy the benefits, post something in the forums and I'll PM you the link. Currently, it has all the fun features you're already used to except they're updated and I've also added a mod called Gcombat eXtended (GCX). It gives you a ton more guns. A few of them cause errors, but I'll post more information on that in the future. I've also had a request for a tutorial on using the Advanced Duplicator, so that should pop up shortly...

If you have a mod request or something you'd like to see in my super-cool script, mention something in the forums.
